Mame Kurogouchi presented her latest collection in, very fittingly, what might be one of the most beautiful contemporary spaces in Paris. This season Ogata- an extremely chic, Japanese teahouse- invited us to discover theirs and Kurogouchi’s universes melt into one. Sharing the common and binding thread of impeccable, time-honored craftsmanship and a mastery of minimalism, these two worlds come together to create a singular elegance. One of everything, please.
Inspired by the history of Japanese ceramics, Kurogouchi utilizes monochromatic layering and gradients to explore the process of working with clay. This allows one to visually isolate the look’s different elements- coming together to create a collection that is nuanced, timeless and consistently refreshing. Not unlike a beautifully balanced cup of tea. With sleek, artful detailing- Kurogouchi brands her looks with an intangible dream quality that screams japanese sensibility- or whispers- quiet luxury.
Raw silk and brushed wool, sleek tailoring and earth toned gradient knits are punctuated with oxfords and leather gloves that, in contrast with the rest, bring something almost campy to the table. Sculptural spiraling chignons paired with minimal red eye makeup add a poetic continuation that compliment the soft looks so well. Pops of terracotta mimic the flame of a kiln, inviting warmth throughout.
Although somber, simplicity is not the right word; rather, maybe, a cloaked complexity marks this collection – mimicking the beauty of the ceramic process exactly. Kurogouchi brings everything she touches to earthy, elegant heights. I have never been more drawn to the color grey.
I leave feeling like the air outside is cleaner, crisper. Upon exiting, I am offered a bite sized ball of something delicious, pillowy, sweet and slightly tart. I think it’s mochi but it’s not.. I have no clue. It’s wonderful. Yuzu? Who cares? I want more. I will be YouTubing how to do a chignon later and maybe make a cup of Twinings Gunpowder Green Tea. I am hoping this has the same effect.
