MARTIN WEBB ON RECENT DEVELOPMENTS IN TOKYO

Back here in Japan, my patch of Tokyo turf lost an iconic hangout last month. Nakameguro’s Organic cafe was often frequented by heavy smoking flaneurs of most persuasions and will be sorely missed after having been closed (along with several other down-at-heel joints) to make way for a new shopping centre that will be tacked on to the neighboring subway station.

Where Nakameguro’s most fashionable late-night drinkers will choose as their next favored spot is a topic of intense speculation (among ourselves, at least).

Nakameguro dwellers will miss Organic Cafe’s Groovisions dummy.

Other random news:

Tokyo is going to get a fashion week. Not many of the most credible
designers will be directly involved, but everyone is planning to stage their shows to coincide with the officially sanctioned events in tents.  We’re all very excited at the prospect of non-Japanese bums on runway-side seats. Perhaps you’d like to read the article I wrote about it.

J photographer Kyoichi Tsuzuki (of "Happy Victims: You Are What You Buy" fame) is up for the No Limits prize at the Rencontres Arles festival.
