NYFF: “Mountains May Depart” (September 28)

Monday night, I was back at the New York Film Festival.

The first film that I saw was director Jia Zhang-ke's "Mountains May Depart" starring actress Zhao Tao.

I'm a huge fan of both of them so, it was great that they were there to introduce the film and participate in a discussion afterward with the audience.

The film begins as a love triangle – which disappears after the first act – although the film spans time from 1999 to 2025.

The third act takes place in Australia in 2025 with all the main characters pretty much removed from it – except for Zhao Tao showing up at the end.

There's some humor in the film and it's very moving with a sense of sadness.

To me, it's not as great as Jia Zhang-ke & Zhao Tao's last film "A Touch of Sin" – which I loved and thought it was the best film of 2013.

But, still it's a terrific film.

I already am looking forward to their next film.
