Dear Shaded Viewers,
– Following the successful launch of the new Mental Health in Fashion film category at the A Shaded View on Fashion Film (ASVOFF) Festival, where the film Editing Through Exhaustion by Cheryll and Marie-Christine Mühlen received top honors, the Mental Health in Fashion initiative moves forward with another impactful event.
Next Step: Panel Talk at WHO’S NEXT On January 19, 2025, as part of the WHO’S NEXT trade fair in Paris, the panel discussion Breaking the Cycle: Ethical Demands, Consumer Behavior, and Mental Health in Fashion will take place. This conversation will address the effects of ethical fashion demands and shifting consumer behaviors on the mental well-being of professionals across the industry.
Participating Experts:
• Samia Larouiche, founder of the media platform WA (off) and a socially critical journalist, offering deep insights into the cultural narratives that shape fashion.
• Serge Carreira, Director of the Emerging Brands Initiative at the Fédération de la Haute Couture et de la Mode and professor at the School of Management and Impact at Sciences Po, specializing in supporting young brands in navigating the industry’s challenges.
• Kiko Hirakawa, model and entrepreneur, bravely sharing her personal experiences with disordered eating and the impact of industry pressures on mental health.
• Florian Müller, communications expert specializing in fashion, sustainability, and mental health, and founder of the Mental Health in Fashion campaign
The discussion will shed light on the challenges faced by fashion professionals, including emerging designers confronting high expectations, retail staff adapting to the shift toward mindful consumption, and textile workers grappling with the weight of ethical demands.
Rooted in the principles of the Mental Health in Fashion initiative, the panel will address often-overlooked mental health issues across the entire fashion supply chain. By identifying unhealthy structures and fostering an ethos of transparency and care, we aim to provide actionable insights for building a healthier, more inclusive, and sustainable industry— redefining how fashion engages with people and the planet.
