Tonight we attended a conference of Tom Volf on Maria Callas. Tom Volf is an actor, producer and the author of Maria by Callas: In Her Own Words, Callas confidential and the Director of the film: Maria by Callas: In Her Own Words. “There are two people in me, Maria and La Callas…” The location of the conference was Maxim’s, a favorite spot of La Callas. Volf held his audience in rapt attention giving teasers for his book and telling us all how just five years ago he knew nothing about Opera or Maria Callas and how destiny brought her into his life and while still a student how he spent all of his free time searching and researching about her on the internet and youtube. What is even more amazing is the fact that within five years he produced and directed the film Maria by Callas: In Her Own Words and published a book of the same title. As an artist she was an absolute perfectionist and if she was not happy with her performance she certainly would not permit a direct recording by the Italian TV station RAI to ever see the light of day. She was a global icon that nearing the end of her life was a bit forgotten but 40 years after her death her memory lives on.
