A Surge of Emotions Opens the 50th New York Film Festival

Dear Shaded Viewers,

Emotions ran high for the festival and for me personally. The festivals 50th year opened with a favorite son, Ang Lee and his astounding film Life of Pi. We were all swept away by the high seas and the debut of a young actor, Suraj Sharma, who, sharing the screen with a fearsome Bengal tiger creates a surprising love story. For me, I have been going to the New York Film Festival since I was 15 years old. I'll leave the math to your imaginations (hint, I am 58). As I venture into making my first feature film, the evening became not only a coming full cirlcle but it gave me a sense of a belonging that I first sensed at the age of 15. We all moved to the Harvard Club for a party that could only happen in New York, in the fall with the Film Society of Lincoln Center as its host.
