Freudenthal/Verhagen opened tonight in what once was a gay bathouse. The viewer wanders around in the dark going from one room to another passing by an over flowing sink and a group of guys in towels referencing the origins of the space.
For the past twenty years Freudenthal/Verhagen have been working together as a creative team. The starting point of the exhibition was that they wanted it to be a totally sensory experience which it definitely was. The exhibition is intended as an art piece in and of itself. They built the rooms and stairs inside the museum so that the viewer had to physically interact with the spaces. To make the photos into living things, some are breathing or have projected body parts. In order to do this the two used moving parts – projection, and in one case a breathing apparatus was placed behind a stretching silk screen with sound. Another image had a sheet on the bed spilling over the frame of the picture and laying draped on the floor.
