Dear Shaded Viewers,
After 33 hours of flight directly from Tokyo to Rio…Daniel Wakahisa reports on Rio fashion week.
What strikes me most about Fashion Rio is the place itself. As a location for fashion shows it is hard to beat.
Diane would certainly disagree considering it rather too hot and humid for her style. In fact, shaded it is not.
Inside the tents we are greeted by two signs. One says “Capacity 1000” and the other “No Guns Allowed”.
Every time I see them I wonder: “Surely you can fit more than 1000 people here”.
This season’s theme (or decoration) is “recycling”, so everywhere there’s a bit of regenerated waste being used to decorate the place. Inside them there’s an installation by different designers. This one is by Thais Losso.
My favourite pieces of furniture are the “containers”.
Backstage at Mara Mac, I asked myself another question: “What are these fish doing here?”
For a moment I was convinced they were going to end up in the goody bags (for the first row, at least).
To my relief they were part of the grand finale. Mara Mac inspiration was “water” and its preciousness in the near future.
The catwalk was a big tidal wave, and the garments were unstructured and beautifully simple – like water
In the meantime, outside the lights are on. And strangely there`re many boys queueing for the next show.
Backstage I learn why. Salinas. As I mentioned earlier fashion shows attract all sort of people here in Brazil. Even straight guys, who are there
not for the fashion but for the models.
That’s not his case, he told me.
And every now and then, considering the amounts of free cocktails provided during the week, some people need not to worry to call a taxi back home.
Last but not least, the most unexpected finale by TNG – a goose feather (and down) pillow fight. Unlike the little fish, I really didn’t see it coming.
I think Diane would not have forgiven them if she had been there.
Nor forgotten this day so soon.
Later,
Daniel
