This summer, the International Center of Photography will present an exhibition dedicated to Yves Saint Laurent and the house’s integral relationship with the art of photography.
Featuring approximately 300 works from the photographic collection and archives of the Musée Yves Saint Laurent Paris, the exhibition traces a four-decade journey through the evolving relationship between fashion and photography.
The show will include works by some of the most iconic fashion photographers, including Richard Avedon, Cecil Beaton, Guy Bourdin, Robert Doisneau, Horst P. Horst, Dominique Issermann, William Klein, Tom Kublin, Helmut Newton, Irving Penn, Paolo Roversi, and David Seidner. These images not only highlight their contribution to the couturier’s rise to success but also chart a creative trajectory that takes us back to a pivotal era in fashion and art.
Alongside the photographs, the exhibition will also display over 200 objects from the collections and archives of the Musée Yves Saint Laurent Paris, dating from the same period. These include contact sheets, promotional notebooks, campaign catalogues, Polaroids, and magazines—each piece offering a behind-the-scenes insight into the musings, processes, and life of the couturier and his legendary fashion house.
On view in New York, the show presents a captivating retrospective that educates visitors on the history of fashion photography and reveals the long-lasting references that continue to shape 21st-century imagery, while illustrating the creative evolution the industry has undergone over the years.
