Ihsane by Sidi Larbi Cherkaoui at the Théâtre du Châtelet, Paris

Dear Shaded Viewers,

Sidi Larbi Cherkaoui’s Ihsane, performed by the Ballet du Grand Théâtre de Genève and Eastman, is a visually stunning and deeply introspective work that showcases the choreographer’s signature blend of cultural exploration and personal narrative. Running from March 30 to April 6, 2025, at the Théâtre du Châtelet, this production marks the completion of a diptych begun with Vlaemsch in 2022.

The title Ihsane, derived from Arabic, signifies both an ideal of kindness and perfection as well as a poignant nod to Ihsane Jarfi, a young man who tragically fell victim to homophobia in Belgium in 2012. Cherkaoui uses this dual meaning to weave a tapestry of themes exploring humanity, familial relationships—particularly father-son dynamics—and his Moroccan heritage. The work is a poetic journey spanning Europe and the Maghreb, infused with spirituality and a longing for reconciliation and inner peace

The stage design, created by Amine Amharech, is a feast for the senses. It transports audiences to Morocco with elements like zellige mosaics, flowing fabrics, and vibrant colors reminiscent of Tangier’s medina. The choreography unfolds amidst shifting panels and video projections that evoke landscapes and cultural motifs. Cherkaoui’s hallmark gestural language—graceful hand movements and fluid transitions—adds depth to the visual storytelling.

The live music is by the Tunisian composer Jasser Haj Youssef with an ensemble featuring the oud, piano, percussion, and vocals by Lebanese singer Fadia Tomb El-Hage and Moroccan artist Mohammed El Arabi-Serghini. This soundscape complements the choreography’s emotional resonance, immersing viewers in a world where movement and melody intertwine seamlessly.

The dancers deliver an exceptional performance marked by precision and emotional intensity. Cherkaoui’s choreography alternates between grand ensemble sequences and intimate solos or duets, creating moments of collective unity as well as personal vulnerability. His influences—ranging from flamenco to kathak—are evident in the intricate footwork and expressive arm movements. The interplay between geometric formations and serpentine flows mirrors the thematic exploration of harmony and humanity. The production celebrates Arab culture while grappling with personal loss and identity, offering a heartfelt homage to both his roots and universal ideals of compassion.

Ihsane is a masterful blend of dance, calligraphy-like movement, and evocative storytelling that resonates on both personal and philosophical levels. With its lush visuals, spellbinding music, and profound themes, it is one of Cherkaoui’s most ambitious works. If you read this before April 6th, this production is not to be missed during its run at the Théâtre du Châtelet.
