Dear Shaded Viewers,
This spring, Kyoto will once again become a vibrant canvas for artistic expression as the 13th edition of KYOTOGRAPHIE International Photography Festival and its sister event, KYOTOPHONIE Borderless Music Festival, take center stage. From April 12 to May 11, 2025, these festivals will merge photography, music, and performance to explore the profound theme of “Humanity.”
KYOTOGRAPHIE, one of Japan’s largest international photography festivals, will feature exhibitions by 14 artists across 15 venues in Kyoto. Notable participants include Pushpamala N, JR, Graciela Iturbide, Eric Poitevin, Martin Parr, Mao Ishikawa, and Lee Shulman & Omar Victor Diop. The festival will showcase works that delve into various aspects of humanity, such as war, gender, identity, emotion, community, connection, nature, pain, and love. A highlight of the festival is a mural at Kyoto Station, bringing art directly to the city’s streets.
Concurrent with KYOTOGRAPHIE, the KG+ open-call art festival will provide a platform for emerging artists to showcase their talents. This satellite event aims to discover and support promising careers in photography, with exhibitions held across more than 120 venues in Kyoto.
KYOTOPHONIE, launched in 2023, is a music festival that bridges traditional genres and venues. The Spring 2025 lineup features iconic performers like Patti Smith, Soundwalk Collective, Filipe Catto, and KOM_I. This festival will explore the theme of humanity through music and performance, creating a unique blend of sound and art.
Both KYOTOGRAPHIE and KYOTOPHONIE serve as cultural bridges, connecting Kyoto with the global community. They transcend traditional boundaries, offering a rich tapestry of artistic expression that resonates with audiences worldwide. The festivals not only celebrate the beauty of Kyoto but also provide a platform for artists to engage with diverse themes and audiences.
The 2025 editions of KYOTOGRAPHIE and KYOTOPHONIE weave together photography, music, and performance to reflect on the complexities and beauty of humanity. Whether you are an art enthusiast or simply a lover of culture, these festivals are a must-visit destination in Kyoto this spring.
Later,
