“Stop being rich” at Vetements SS23 – text by Leticia Dare

Dear Shaded Viewers,

“Stop being rich”, a strong sentiment printed across a plain white t’shirt on the runway today at Vetements SS23. As ripped jeans dragged low on the ground, oversized tracksuits bleach dyed and check blankets -similar to that given to Guram at the refugee camps he once lived in- were printed on suits, one can only assume the idea is to not look rich either. Vetements has always been a brand that plays with the boundaries of dressing, how we are perceived through what we wear, and this collection was a perfect example of that. With inspiration taken from his personal past of living through a war, his first barbie doll, zebra prints and the red lipstick his grandmother wore even whilst in a refugee camp, the show was ‘a summary of childhood memories, war trauma, hidden desires and twisted imagination’. It felt part techno rave, part sporty goth with a strong nod to punk -including the hair- and sharp shouldered suiting with a touch of 80s glamour.

Later,
