EO The Singular Voice of Jerzy Skolimowski by Vincent Gagliostro

EO
The Singular Voice of Jerzy Skolimowski

My first encounter with Jerzy Skolimowski was The Deep End, a film that has remained with me to this day. It’s legendary, and at 84 director Jerzy Skolimowski has made one of his wittiest and most visually inventive films. We follow the travels of a roaming from place to place donkey named EO. After being removed from the only life he’s ever known in a traveling circus, EO begins a journey across the Polish and Italian countryside, experiencing in varying degrees both the cruelty and kindness of human beings as well as captivity and freedom. Skolimowski imagines the animal’s mesmerizing journey as an ever-shifting interior landscape, marked by absurdity and warmth in equal measure, we the viewer find ourselves in the unique perspective of the protagonist. This is Skolimowski’s own bold vision about the foibles of human nature, seen from the ultimate outsider.
