ORLAN EN CAPITALES at Maison Europeenne de la Photographie

Dear Shaded Viewers,

Anyone that knows ORLAN knows that you NEVER write her name any other way than in capitals, hence the title of retrospective dedicated to her  at the Maison Europeenne de la Photographie. The show offers a panoramic view of her career since the 60’s which were marked by the fight against the political and religious pressures exerted against women’s bodies up until her current work. The exhibition includes films of the surgical operations, first time I saw them was at Mode Landed in 2001 when Walter Van Beirendonck dedicated a room to her videos of the operations. The MEP has restored and reconstituted many works that have never, or practically never, been shown. Each work is a manifestation and a dialogue with emblems in the history of art. I loved the video in one the rooms with her selling kisses to a real artist for 5 francs. ORLAN provokes, challenges and pioneers the way forward.

There is a catalogue of the exhibition, information below.
