A REAL UN REAL AGE – by Sophie Joy Wright

Dear Diane and Shaded Viewers,

Japanese designer Kunihiko Morinaga is still very much the talk of the town after the success of his much anticipated debut presentation in Paris this week and his exhibition at L'Eclaireur. ANREALAGE is his brand that began in 2005, which has a strong focus on conceptual experimentation and clear non-conformity to fashion. Detail is considered a religious undertaking for the designer, who in his AW07, hand-sewed 20,000 gold buttons onto one garment. Morinaga also looks to constantly re-conceptualise the form of garments and of the body. His SS09 collection presented clothing in basic geometrical shapes of the circle, triangle, square; completely ignoring and therefore reassessing the human form. More recently, Morinaga has developed clothing that emerges under certain light using photo-chromatic materials, and this week, pieces in his SS15 collection were reactive to the heat of the runway spotlights. I think it's safe to say everyone is happy to see him now presenting in Paris.
