MARCH 24TH 2010 ,TOKYO
My friend Charlie Brown (Fumihiro
Hayashi), legendary editor of Japanese culture and fashion magazine DUNE, is having an exhibition on the past 17 years of DUNE history called the UNDERGROUND SPIRITUAL GAME, at his amazing THE LAST GALLERY in Tokyo. Within the pages of DUNE (which is a completely independent magazine, a true rarity in today's publishing climate) Charlie has spent the past 17 years traveling the globe documenting interesting places, people, and things, photographed by some of the best contemporary art and fashion photographers in the world. At this comprehensive retrospective exhibition, back issues of the magazine as well as over 1000 unpublished prints and rare posters from the magazine will be available for sale.
One of my favorite people to have a good drink with when I am in Tokyo, Charlie is a real character and a rare breed. DUNE is not just another well photographed Japanese fashion magazine, as Charlie is a true journalist who takes an ethnographic and cultural critical approach, which is quit unique.
For those of you who are in Tokyo or who are going soon definitely check out the gallery and current exhibition. Combined with the gallery you will find an eccentric bookstore called THE ANARCHY BOOK CENTER. This crazy collection of hard to find books and magazines, also features back issues of DUNE as well as a great zine collection can also be found on line, at the link above.
The exhibition runs from MARCH 24TH until
APRIL 18TH 2010. For more information about this and other interesting events at THE LAST GALLERY, check out the RVST JAPAN which is designed and run by my other friend Tsune. Read their credo here. Congratulations Charlie san and Tsune, I wish I could be there to celebrate with you.
