Dear Shaded Viewers,
Last Thursday, June 25, the Rick Owens boutique at Palais Royal in Paris hosted the signing of Kembra Pfahler, the artist’s first comprehensive monograph, published by Rizzoli.
A singular figure in contemporary performance art and underground culture, Kembra Pfahler has spent more than four decades building a fearless body of work that fuses punk, body art, ritual imagery, and theatrical provocation. Through performances, photographs, illustrations, and rarely seen archival material, the 336-page volume traces the evolution of an artist whose uncompromising vision has earned her a cult following far beyond the art world.

Often described as a pioneering force in shock art, Pfahler challenges conventional ideas of beauty, gender, and the body, transforming elements of fetish, occult symbolism, and DIY punk aesthetics into radical artistic statements.
Her influence extends well beyond galleries and performance spaces. Designers including Rick Owens, Marc Jacobs, Helmut Lang, and Supreme have all embraced her distinctive visual universe, cementing her status as both an artistic icon and a fashion inspiration.
The publication features contributions from Jeffrey Deitch, John Waters, Rick Owens, and Anohni, offering personal perspectives on Pfahler’s enduring impact across art, music, and fashion. Kembra Pfahler is available through Rizzoli and Dover Street Market.
Lately,
Eva
