Dear Shaded Viewers,
I had the opportunity to preview “Disco, I’m Coming Out,” at the Philharmonie de Paris which opened its doors on February 14, 2025. This vibrant and thought-provoking showcase not only celebrates the glittering era of disco but also delves into its profound cultural impact.
The exhibition takes visitors on a captivating journey back to the roots of disco, a musical movement that burst onto the scene over half a century ago in the United States. Through a carefully curated collection of artifacts, music, and visual displays, the Philharmonie de Paris has managed to capture the essence of an era that was as much about social revolution as it was about music and dance.
What sets this exhibition apart is its dual focus on the festive and militant aspects of disco. The curators have skillfully woven together the story of disco’s rise to popularity with its role in shaping social movements. Visitors are invited to explore how disco became a platform for marginalized communities, particularly LGBTQ+ individuals and people of color, to express themselves freely and challenge societal norms.
True to the spirit of disco, the exhibition is a sensory extravaganza. The Philharmonie’s space has been transformed into a glittering wonderland that mirrors the opulent nightclubs of the 1970s. Pulsating beats, dazzling light displays, and iconic fashion pieces transport visitors back to the heyday of disco, creating an immersive experience that goes beyond traditional museum exhibitions.
“Disco, I’m Coming Out” doesn’t shy away from addressing the deeper cultural significance of the genre. It explores how disco music became a soundtrack for social change, challenging racial and gender stereotypes, and promoting inclusivity. The exhibition successfully balances the joy and exuberance of disco with its role in advancing important social causes.
Running until August 17, 2025, this exhibition is both entertaining and educational, offering a fresh perspective on a genre that continues to influence music and culture today.
“Disco, I’m Coming Out” is more than just a trip down memory lane. It’s a celebration of resilience, creativity, and the power of music to unite and inspire. This exhibition proves that disco is far from dead – its spirit lives on, as vibrant and relevant as ever.
Later,
Diane
