From Belgium with Love : Jean Paul Lespagnard and the Stolen Waffles text by Mael Heinz

Dear Shaded Viewers,

A surreal crime happened this summer ! This July, fashion and art designer Jean Paul Lespagnard was robbed in Liege. You could expect a robbery of furniture or fashion like what happened to Olivier Rousteing last year. But this loot is more unexpected : a trolley full of golden waffles ! We can hear you laugh from here, they are actually paper weights. However, this event blocks aficionados from being able to enjoy  Jean Paul’s  numerous talents at an affordable price (65€)

A waffle made by Lespagnard composed of aluminum and plated brass, made in India

Jean Paul Lespagnard is a multidisciplinary designer from Belgium. After doing art studies, he attended night classes for fashion, but it was not enough for him : he quickly imagined his creations into a story of their own. And started to travel endlessly mixing urban and local influences. That’s why his style is a lively, composite and unexpected. One of his greatest tour de force was in Damien Jalet’s Skid, a ballet inspired by Japanese mountain climbers. You will be moved to tears when a dancer tears up his BMX-Style costume nearly falling off the slope. About the waffles, even though they are the emblem of the town, they were made in Delhi with personally selected craftsmen.

This theft happened near the train station of Liège in the Guillemin area, in a co-working space he redesigned. The trolley was part of the installation that Lespagnard wanted to be heartwarming. It was stolen on July 5th at 8am by an unidentified man but later the trolley was found with a large part of the stolen waffles. Investigations are still on going,  but JPL offers a real waffle to the thief if he surrenders or 5 to the person who is able to help the local authorities

As a child, Lespagnard, native from Liege spent several daily hours at the Liege train station on his way to school. He decided to make it a warmer place for workers
