Dear Shaded viewers,
The Grand Palais Immersif in Paris opens its doors to cut a direct path to South Korea from the 26th of July to the 25th of August 2024.
Through the power of contemporary media art and cutting-edge technology, the Grand Palais Immersif’s current exhibition ‘Decoding Korea’ explores key concepts of the human experience that speak to the identity of South Koreans. The exhibition was announced by the Ministry of Culture, Sports, and Tourism of South Korea, launching in the presence of its Vice Minister, and the Korea Arts Management Service.
Nam June PAIK, KANG Yiyun, KWON Hayoun, KIM Heecheon, RAM HAN, ROOMTONE, PARK Junebum, YEOM Ji Hye, LEE Yongbaek, LEE Lee-nam, and Jung Yeondoo are the leading Korean artists selected for the exhibition. Each possesses an ability to communicate the past, present, or future narrative of their nation. Nineteen works, including multi-projection installations and interactive virtual realities each offer an insight into memories, dreams, fears, and needs encompassing social, political, historical, and cultural contexts.
The exhibition is a testament to the way digital technology allows us to transcend the borders of space and time. Together, the immersive artworks become a philosophical journey through Korea’s complex, often overlooked history and development. The audience becomes fully immersed in the transition of a colonized nation ruined by war into a top-ten global economy.
The exhibition is part of “Korea Season”, the Ministry of Culture, Sports, and Tourism of South Korea’s showcase throughout France that began in May this year. Its Minister Yoo In-Chon “looks forward to the moment when the experience in ‘Decoding Korea’ resonates” with the audience, “sparking new narratives and perhaps even inspiring journeys to Korea”. The project was envisioned in pioneering artist Nam June PAIK’s work ‘Wrap Around the World’, created for the 1988 Seoul Olympics. It is given life again as the Olympic games take over Paris. His original project, described as a “cocktail of art and sports” and “truly global event” is discoverable in video footage in ‘Decoding Korea’.
