Gwand 2022 Lucerne – Sustainable Festival and Market at the Music Pavilion on the Quai with Guest Country Vietnam and 2 Awards – Illustration: André Wilhelm Grafik-Design: Patrick Beffa

Dear Shaded Viewers,

For the second year in a row GWAND will take place on the Quai near the Musikpavillon from 10 am to 10 pm with free admission. There will be 40 vendors and a variety of gastronomic offers along with fashion shows, information events, music and parties in keeping with the GWAND motto Sustainable Live Together.

The artists André Wilhelm, the former Miss Switzerland Dominique Rinderknecht, the Guest Country Vietnam, the environmental organisation Greenpeace and the two companies Schulthess and RRREVOLVE are among the exhibitiors there to promote sustainable fashion with awards together with Gwand.

The podium on the pavilion stage will be designed for the second time by the artist André Wilhelm, who also designed the festival’s main poster. On Friday, September 2nd, at 5.00 pm., André Wilhelm will perform on the pavilion stage.

Part of the Gwand Market is the Faircustomer Village with offers from the Faircustomer network, the Swiss platform for sustainable producers and suppliers of almost everything you need for life. The Vietnam Corner is integrated into the village with many sustainable suppliers, designers from Vietnam. Together with its Moroccan lounge, the Faircustomer Village becomes an exotic part of the Gwand.

Schulthess partners with GWAND in the Popup Laundry. Schulthess is the Swiss expert in washion technology. At the heart of the partnership between Schulthess and the Gwand is Schulthess’s Sustainable Fashion Design Challenge, a competition to promote sustainably producing Swiss fashion designers. On 1 September, the winners will be presented on the stage of the Music Pavilion and will present their products in the Schulthess Pop-Up Container at the festival. In addition to Schulthess, the fair store RRREVOLVE is also supporting a sustainable fashion label with its Go Fair Award.

This year, Gwand has its own stand, the Gwand Bazar, selling products from ex-Miss Switzerland Dominique Rinderknecht’s label Hueregeil as well as jewellery and accessories by Huma Adnan, a designer from Pakistan who works with refugee women from Afghanistan. Also on offer are the Gwand foulards produced especially in Switzerland and selected trouvailles as well as vintage clothing and accessories.

The Embassy of Vietnam in Switzerland celebrates Vietnam’s Independence Day at the Gwand. Rachel Isenschmid, founder of KIBV Keep It Beautiful Vietnam and Ananda Zurich curated and organised the sustainable labels and companies from Vietnam.

The British Swiss Chamber of Commerce is running the regulars’ table for its members from Lucerne at the Gwand Festival.

A colourful bouquet of fashion shows, performances, exhibitions, demonstrations, panels, workshops and events by Gwand partners will take place during the festival. Don’t miss: The Gwand Party by Pista on Saturday, 3 September at the Molo Bar in Lucerne.

The Making-of

The planning and preparation of the festival requires a long lead time. The Gwand is organised by a small team that puts a lot of heart and soul into rebuilding the once world-famous fashion festival as a sustainable festival. The core team includes: Suzanna Vock (Founder), Sandra Sapigni (Project Management), Patrick Beffa (Graphics, Web), Roli Mummenthaler (Stadtpfütze) and Dario Grimaudo (Pista, Gastro Management), Goncalo Martins (Rawport Studio, Social Media and Marketing), André Wilhelm (Stage Design), Hubert Lüscher (Infrastructure), and the Gwand partners Tania Schellenberg (Managing Director Faircostumer) and Rachel Isenschmid (Founder KIBV Keep It Beautiful Vietnam). Then there are the many helpers during the festival, without whose help the Gwand could not be held.

Even though passion and not money is the driving force behind the Gwand, considerable financial resources and donations in kind are needed to cover the festival expenses. Without companies and institutions such as Schulthess, the ALI Fund of the City of Lucerne, Bild + Ton, the Gemeinnützige Gesellschaft der Stadt Luzern and market and catering suppliers who pay stall fees, it would not be possible to organise the festival.

My personal experience with GWAND goes back to 1993-2004 when GWAND moved from being a Swiss centric fashion festival to one globally recognised giving what was, at that time, the biggest financial award, 100,000 EUROS to the likes of Raf Simons and Haider Ackermann among others. In 2021 the founder of GWAND Suzanna Vock launched the comeback of the former fashion festival as GWAND Sustainable Festival. The focus is on the various aspects of the three areas of sustainability: economy, ecology and social issues. A festival market, various discussion rounds, key-notes and workshops round off the festival agenda.
