Namesak3 – SS’23 A Lifeguard for Dark Times | Text by Nafiseh Soolari

Dear Shaded Viewers,

A beautiful story of a journey through mental health and love, the Hsieh brothers Micheal and Steve create “alternative visions” in fabrics to amplify the harrowing details of one brothers precarious mental health held together by the love of his brother. That love is titled LIFE GUARD and the collection are creations that put forth the story but also wants to serve as a reminder to hold space for the conversations on mental health. Acknowledging that creativity was the journey through, to share that message with the audience and to embrace what it means to seek a life raft through fashion.

It was a play on the nostalgia of New York City in the 2000s-era. Jerseys were deconstructed and t-shirts were worn as scarves. Oversized asymmetrical caps and chunky sneakers covered in knits were everywhere to be seen. A first project concept with Birkenstock was revealed. The influences of basketball aesthetics were key—understanding the details elaborated on via fabrics hand-dyed by Japanese artisans to create a rust-like effect elevated the drama on the ensembles. Incorporating recycled elements from sources like safety glasses, ash and pineapples were a welcome touch in this age of ongoing sustainability conversations.

A collection birthed by the love of brotherhood—thank you for having me witness it Namesak3.
