#OccupyAtopos2021 #AlexisFidetzis #RevoltingBodies May – December 2021

For the 2021 programme of #OccupyAtopos and with reference to the 200 year anniversary of the Greek revolution, the artistic director of ATOPOS cvc, Vassilis Zidianakis invites artist, historian, and researcher Alexis Fidetzis to curate the hybrid, ever-evolving project #RevoltingBodies, where his own personal artistic practice will interact with that of invited contributors and collaborators.

The project #RevoltingBodies aims to integrate the Greek Revolution into a broader dialogue about the revolutionary phenomenon that to an extent defined modernity, avoiding the glorious, grand narratives and immersing into the stories of the bodies upon which both the revolutionary action and the mythologies around it are imposed.
Bodies defined by gender or race, factual or mythical, tender and brutal, glorified and beheaded. Through these bodies, the project will see the revolution as something more than an archetypical battle between good and evil. It will investigate the means of turning the individual into a hero and also the revolutionary narrative into a structural element of the national imagination.

Fidetzis will occupy both the actual and the virtual space of ATOPOS, transforming it into a ‘Revolutionary Headquarters of Language and Image’. Throughout the duration of the artist’s residency, his own artistic practice is to coexist with a vibrant program performances, discussions, lectures, workshops, screenings, installations and zines that will manifest the desired multidimentional approach.

The program’s first event is the workshop ‘Inventing Revolution’ in collaboration with invited artist’, the 11th Studio and the students of the Athens School of Fine Arts. The workshop will introduce participants to the concept of Invented Tradition, an idea originally developed in the collective volume ‘The Invention of Tradition’ published in 1983 and edited by Eric Hobsbawm and Terence Ranger. Participants will be invited to create original works which will initially be presented in digital form, at www.revoltingbodies.gr after the completion of the workshop by the end of May.
