Considered the father of South African photography, Jurgen Schadeberg produced some of the most famous portraits of Nelson Mandela and other South African political figures and of jazz giants such as Hugh Masekela and Miriam Makeba.  He also documented the everyday lives of ordinary South Africans — the vibrant energy of township life as well as the brutal violence of the apartheid regime.   Our exhibit focuses on Schadeberg’s work from the 1950s, one of the most turbulent decades in South African history, a time when black cultural life in South Africa was blossoming while at the same time the newly-elected nationalist government was putting in place the brutal laws of apartheid.
