ZIGGY CHEN – Autumn Winter 2021 Men’s – PFW – Text by Ivo Barraza Castaneda.

Ziggy Chen: A brand from Shanghai that wants to deconstruct uniforms in a transculturally sensitive way. So much for the PR talk. The show itself is fun: Models on treadmills are fun, models walking backwards on treadmills are fun, and the fisheye closeups are not just fun, but a cool way to see the details of the collection.
The collection itself however is not that much fun, unfortunately. It consists of quite literally: uniforms. There are looks sprinkled in between that take us away from the traditional, military grade, uniform but unfortunately these just remain plain.
What uniforms do is make us blend into each other when we all wear them. That doesn’t mean that they have to be plain. What they can also do, is make us stick out: the uniformed civilians. In that sense, every punk in a military jacket has done more to deconstruct uniforms than Ziggy Chen.

Hello, my name is Ivo. My three favorite things in life are: Thinking deeply about visual creation. I like having long discussions of ideas that might reinvent the course of history. And finally, spending time with the people I love. Since I was a child, I was always involved in some activity around plastic arts, music and literature. That’s how I learned to sew by hand at the age of five, which later led me to focus on my main professional media: Fashion Design.
