Dear Shaded Viewers,
Every season Issey Miyake brings a bit of joy and positivity to the fashion crowd. It might not have been a physical event this year, and believe me I had no urge to be physical anywhere this season, but the film managed to convey something like a dip in fresh lake.
The ISSEY MIYAKE Spring/Summer 2021 UNPACK THE COMPACT collection explores the idea of making clothes travel the world in a compact form, to share even more the wonder and joy of unpacking them.
It was during the preparation of the last collection that Satoshi Kondo, while examining the number of boxes ready to be sent to Paris, realized the volume of clothing that had to be transported. He then had a revelation: to make the next collection as compact as possible. So he imagined it to be so compact that it could fit in a single box!
Tying, rolling, folding, stacking, layering… the clothes in this collection offer a multitude of creative possibilities to make them compact. Beyond utility and comfort, they give the person who unpacks them the pleasure of seeing them transform.
UNPACK THE COMPACT
When you open what is delivered
When you untie what is wrapped
When you lay out what is folded small
When you loosen what is bundled up.
When things are rolled up neatly,
When things are stacked on top of each other
Or when things in pieces are put together.
It is a simple moment like this that we find pleasing.
When things transform, our perspective changes too.
And with this change we feel the beginning of something new.
