Aitor Throup modular costume designs for ‘Autobiography’ by Wayne McGregor at Sadler’s Wells London

Dear Shaded Viewers,

Aitor Throup collaborated with choreographer Wayne McGregor CBE, creating the costumes for ‘Autobiography’ which was based on a cycle of choreographic portraits remembering pasts and speculative futures. Throup is known for his figurative and conceptual explorations of human anatomy through deep narratives and metaphorical objects.

For ‘Autobiography’ Throup distilled and reduced several of his design archetypes to reach their essence. Each garment celebrates the unique identity of each dancer and is tailored to each individual, with the ergonomically cut costumes allowing them to move freely without restrictions through the delicate translucent mesh which is used throughout.

“The genome concept behind ‘Autobiography’ and Wayne’s passion to explore his own identity through such depths inspired me to progress my own conceptual enquiry into the essence of self. My objective is always to create anatomical objects which can create an instinctive – and hopefully emotional – connection with the viewer or wearer. Through an anatomical approach to design I aim to create symbols that remind us of our own systematically layered nature.”
– Aitor Throup
