Dear Shaded Viewers,

“Looking for Oum Kulthum” relates the story of Mitra, an Iranian film director, who realises her dream by directing a film about the famous Egyptian singer and diva Oum Kulthum. The film explores the struggles, sacrifices and the price of Oum Kulthum’s success as a female artist in a male dominated society, which led her to an emotional breakdown..

The artist director, Shirin Neshat, continues on her obsession in representing female strength and women in general, in the Muslim world.

The film debuted last Saturday at the Venice Film Festival and will premier at Toronto Film Festival on September 11th and at London Film Festival on October 7th.
