Dear Shaded Viewers,

Chicago’s underground club scene of the 1970s by Michael L. Abramson

In the mid 70’s a graduate student at the Illinois Institute of Technology, Michael L. Abramson, spent a lot of his time in clubs with names like Perv’s House and Pepper’s Hideout. Abramson’s work is a document of the South Side subculture, a community that disappeared by the mid-80’s. His book Light On the South Side was published in 2009 and he died in 2011. Abramson’s photographs are included in the permanent collections of the Smithsonian, the Art Institute of Chicago, the California Museum of Photography, the Chicago Historical Society, and the Milwaukee Art Museum.
