Antonio Lopez was the illustrator known to have launched the  careers of Grace Jones, Pat Cleveland, Jerry Hall. among many others. Last night "Antonio Lopez: Future Funk Fashion" opened an exhibition and tribute to the illustrator with over 300 illustrations, photographs and designs and our man…Miguel Villalobos was there for us. He worked for three decades before dying o AIDS at 44 in 1987. Amelia Malagamba-Ansotegui and  Rocio Aranda-Alvarado curated the exhibition.During his lifetime Antonio collaborated with designers Charles James, Karl Lagerfeld, he was known for his street casting. Lopez was born in Puerto Rico but grew up in East Harlem from the age of seven.  Lopez attended FIT where he met his life partner Juan Ramos. His first job was at WWD. His work was seen in The New York Times, Interview Magazine and was oten commissioned by fashion brands. Lopez and Ramos were long time friends of Karl Lagerfeld who put them u when they first moved to Paris in 1969. "Antonio's Girls," included Tina Chow, Pat Cleveland and Grace Jones among others. The exhibition will be on view through November 26.
