MERCEDES-BENZ FASHION WEEK MADRID – PEDRO COVELO SS16 TEXT BY PHILIPPE POURHASHEMI

Dear Shaded Viewers,

When cowboys go to town, they rush to Pedro Covelo for sartorial thrills. The young Spanish designer -who won the ModaFad prize for Best Designer last year- definitely has a sense of humor, but he also knows how to cut a mean suit, while delivering shows full of energy. Flirting with androgyny this season, he used the same fabrics for men and women, as well as quirky face prints and playful forms of embellishment, such as fringes, patchwork and oversized ruffles. Twisting classic tailoring to striking effect, he shortened his jackets and cropped his pants, which often had a kick flare. Several pieces were made in traditional, dark blue denim, giving structured shapes a cleaner look. With a focus on buttersoft suede -in bright yellow or blue- Covelo demonstrated his innate understanding of luxury and quality, making his pieces much more complex than they seem.

Best,

Philippe
