Dear Shaded Viewers,
Here is the first post from my first trip to Dubai for Fashion Forward. Aside from a discovery trip to the Middle East, the reason I was there was for Fashion Talks, conversation with Butheina Kazim, the co-founder and MD of Cinema Akil and I might add, a new member of the ASVOFF 8 jury for Centre Pompidou in November. Our conversation was Fashion and Film: The Cross-Pollination Between. Butheina Kazim started her career as a Designer in Montreal and currently lives between Dubai and Abu Dhabi.
The first image is the tallest building in the world, however a taller one is currently under construction somewhere in the Middle East. I love the black and white photo with a few new friends based in Dubai, on my right is Butheina Kazim and next to her the founder and Editor-in-Chief and Publisher of Gazette, Tima Ouzden, she executed the great meeting of the minds between me and Butheina. I will try and see if there is a video of our talk. Great fun for someone who hates public speaking.
Cutting edge Abaya fashion by Faiza Bouguessa, a French-Algerian designer and wedding couture by Yousef Al-Jasmi, Yousef started designing at the age of 17 and has dressed Lady Gaga, J-Lo, Taylor Swift, Dita Von Teese, sharon Stone, Paris Hilton, etc.
Later we paid a short visit to the Dubai Concept store the Cartel where I found many of my favorite designers and can imagine even more of them feeling at home in this industrial and edgy shop.
A little street action and some shots from the VIP room and a view from my lovely hotel at the Grosvenor House in Dubai Marina.
More to come from my talk and also my visit to the rare perfume shop, Plethora, that carries Diane Pernet Paris and a tour of the Sharjah Biennial 12 'The Past, the present and the possible…
Later,
Diane
