Dear Shaded Viewers and Diane,
Taking its cue from Julia Fullerton-Batten’s In Between photographs, capturing young women floating away in sleekly furnished rooms, palmer//harding winter collection gravitates on the brink of womanhood, where their poised, buttoned-up styles still are tempered by the silky freshness of adolescence. Straight, black velvet stripes twist and wrap around the arms, and shirtdresses are gathered at the waist and almost recall the way we used to carry our sweaters, tied around the midriff when they became too hot to wear. A midnight blue coat comes fastened with a fabric belt, like a dressing gown from times past, and accents of plum court the autumn season. Focusing on a rite of passage that’s ever so blurred today, this austerity of sorts and the kind of copper thread embroidery one might once have found hemming curtains, or used to embellish their own napkins with monograms, are suggestive of a slightly nostalgic, folkloric charm.
Later,
Silvia
