“Bilbao International Art&Fashion” 2014 – by Silvia Bombardini

Dear Shaded Viewers and Diane,

Two years since my last visit, Bilbao shines ever as brightly as I remembered. The air is salty with ocean lust, Gehry's Guggenheim twinkles in the sun, guarded by a puppy in full bloom. Persuade is still the best shop on the planet. A fortunate coincidence of flights allowed this time me a couple of mornings indulgently wandering around, from the Zubizuri to the Vizcaya Bridge, through the old town centre and fishermen's village, right down to the seaside – a panoramic post will shortly follow. It's no surprise that a city so receptive to the joys of design as Bilbao has become would soon develop an appetite for fashion too, and the 4th edition of the "Bilbao International Art&Fashion" contest organized by Bilboost certainly comes as a testament of hunger. Over a thousand emerging designers aged between 18 and 35 took part this time, and the choice of the three winner shows once again a peculiar, yet successful balance of worldwide influence and Basque pride. By a jury comprised of both designers from the Basque Country and global figures operating in the fields of art, fashion and culture – like Sara Maino of Vogue Italia, for one -, Alison Tsai, Daniel Santos and Gorka Lopez Antxia were respectively awarded the first prizes in the categories of Best Outfit Design, Best Accessory Design, and Best Young Basque Designer, for a total of 25.000€.
