WHO IS ON NEXT? at Pitti Uomo – By Sophie Joy Wright

Dear Diane and Shaded Viewers,

WHO IS ON NEXT? is the competition at Pitti Uomo awarding designers from Italy, or those who make their garments in Italy.

Jimi Roos makes all his shirts in Florence by hand and embroiders them using the ‘fault’ of sewing machines to create unique designs that are whimsical and refreshing. There’s a nice video showing what he does on his site…

T.Lipop – London-based duo Tom Lipop and business partner Eser Aydemir (cover image) won the ready-to-wear award for their take on “Modern Tradition”. The simplicity of their garments was lovely to see, and set a calm backdrop for the signature envelope-closures of their jackets and coats. There’s a nod to classicism here, though they’re pushing forward with pieces like their hooded leather backpack. Very cool.

It’s only the second collection from this Italian-born footwear designer, Alberto Premi, which won him the accessories prize in this year’s competition. He’s very young and you can see this in his shoes, in a good way; using colour adventurously and experimentation in design.

Luca is the creative director of Maison Lvchino. The collection we saw uses classic principles of Italian men’s tailoring but distorts them a little – in colour or design – creating a charming approach that feels new and relevant. Also, the length on that blue-striped coat is perfection.
