Pitti Uomo Day 1 – by Sophie Joy Wright

Dear Diane and Shaded Viewers,

Yesterday was a wonderful day for many reasons. First of all, you, Diane, and I were reunited. Then our afternoon was started with “Vezzoli Primavera-Estate”. The surreal works of Francesco Vezzoli are installed in three of the smaller, more unnoticed museums around Florence; Musei Stefano Bardini, Museo di Casa Martelli and the Museo Bellini. Vezzoli’s work is placed within the renaissance collections in each of these locations that at first felt a little like “Where’s Waldo” to spot his work in each salon, though this aligns with his satirical sensibility of the art cannon and symbols of religious classicism, so it works. The art goes on to also comment on the quasi-religiosity of celebrity culture [Richard Gere as Botticelli’s Venus was a favourite], and so questions our relationship with both these worlds – classical art and the celebrity.

Florence and Fashion is a photography exhibition at the Palazzo Vecchio, celebrating the masters of Italian fashion, Roberto Cavalli, Ferruccio Ferragamo, Frida Gianni, Ermano Scervino, and Emilio Pucci. On display is a range of large-scale images that have graced the pages of Vogue Italia since the 60s.

We then visited the space where the “Outstanding Minds and Hands. The Many Faces of Italian Fashions”, was previewed. This 9-episode documentary series is directed by Francesco Imperato and curated by Angelo Flaccavento, and presents the Italian Fashion System with all its “peculiarities and star players”. It will be broadcast later this year, so stay tuned.

The view here was divine.

We managed to pop into the Pucci exhibition “Designing the Dream” and Palazzo Pucci. Although we only had a brief moment, the impact of Pucci was nonetheless felt. A dream it was.

The evening concluded with the Polimoda Graduate show that was streamed live on ASVOF. A full review is coming shortly.

And so, yes, a wonderful day! This was all made possible by the angel Gabriel Our Driver who took us to all these places over the city in a short time. Thank you Pitti Imagine Uomo for Gabriel!

Happy Wednesday,

Sophie Joy
