The artist and the artisan: Danilo Donati and Piero Farani New book by Clara Tosi Pamphili about Danilo Donati, Pasolini, Fellini – images by Mustafa Sabbagh Text by Clara Tosi Pamphili Exhibition March 9 – June 22

Dear Shaded Viewers,

For the past six centuries Itlay has been recognized for its exceptional artisanal abilities, the craftsmanship is second to none. This is the land of the prodigies who gave birth to the Renaissance and to Neorealism. Examine the genius of Leonardo da Vinci, capable of designing equipment for war and for theatre, of painting the ultimate icon of Western art, of dissecting cadavers and cataloguing faces, of working with graphite, paint, wood and glue.

In the light of the current crisis to revamp the archives of Italian know-how, the Italians are once again stepping onto the stage where their extraordinary skills take the spotlight as the no-limits artists regaining prestige alongside the efficient, specialized professionals.

Danilo Donati and Piero Farani use contemporary tools and interpretations exploring their journey, a creative chain that nourished a series of undisputed masterpieces. This exhibition and catalogue re-examine their collaboration with visionary poet/directors and their capacity to produce work with a timeless quality, precisely because it was conceived.

Mustafa Sabbagh's photographs serve as a pridge from the present into the future for what deserves to be immortalized. Sabbagh translates the memory of their work into a contemporary body of art in the same way that Donati and Farani translated the visions of Fellini and Pasolini into costumes. The actors faces are covered, as is the photographer's style, out of respect. Donati was a master costume designer with an ability to project himself into the realms imagined by the filmmakers. He won an Oscar for Franco Zeffirelli's Romeo and Juliet in 1969 and Federico Fellini's Casanova in 1976. The Gospel According to Matthew in collaboration with Pier Paolo Pasolini was Donati's masterpiece. Donati began his work on costumes and sets with Luchino Visconti and later created a set of paper outfits for the popular program Can-zonissima. With his collaborations with Pier Paolo Pasolini and Federico Fellini he shared a dream using any andall means possible to transcend the limitations of reality.
