SERKAN CURA COUTURE AW 2013/14 – BY SOPHIE JOY WRIGHT

Dear Shaded Viewers and Diane,

Countless designers use feathers as whimsical adornment, though rarely is this material given the consideration to stand on its own. And this is understandable because feathers can be fussy to work with and potentially monotonous in a collection. For Serkan Cura, however, feathers are the absolute focus of his work, and the variance in colour, texture, and tone in his latest collection was far from predictable. Cura, who has turkish origins and was trained in Antwerp, sculpted feathers in ways that made them almost unidentifiable, or at times in such an abundance that the pieces seemed nearly void of their presumptive weightlessness; an interesting approach, and something that speaks to his talent as a designer.
