PHOEBE ENGLISH WINDOW AT DOVER STREET MARKET | SPRING SUMMER 2013

PE window

Dear Shaded Viewers,

Phoebe English made her first-ever major installation in the UK in the window of Dover Street Market.

The team of Phoebe English constructed the 1.5 meters globe with the same grid textiles that were used in the S/S13 collection. It was constrcted by hand using 30,000 blue glass bugle beads, each one measuring 3 cm. The grid structure is formed around a clear acrylic sphere made for the window by Talbot Designs which supports the weight of the beads, 50 kgs.

The piece is a celebration of traditional time-consuming hand work. The basis of the research behind the globe is the long time obsession with 'Astrolabes' an old instrument for locating the position of the Sun, Moon, Planets and Stars. At its core it is a calculation device.

Phoebe English consulted with Shane Alam of Talbot Designs,
Phillip Cooper and Martin Barron on this creative journey.
