In Gymnasium 20 athletes ’perform’ indoor gymnastic-like routines. Their movements are rhythmical and repetitive, like clockwork. We investigate how the same qualities valued in sport; camaraderie, focus and control, submissive behaviour; are also valued in militarised societies. We link the sportsfield to the battlefield as a demonstration of legitimate patriotic aggression, and success as a source of national pride.
Gill and Dupont are artists, producers and performers who work together on a practice that encompasses photography, performance, choreography, film and design. Recent exhibitions include : remix: wa contemporary art, Art Gallery of Western Australia; The Biennale of Sydney; Contemporary Australian Art: Optimism, Gallery of Modern Art, Brisbane. They won the Basil Sellers Art Prize with their video work Gymnasium.
