Robert Mapplethorpe by Sofia Coppola

Dear Shaded Viewers and Diane,

There is a gentle harshness in shapes and frames, a certain quiescent force of light, which will always distinguish a Robert Mapplethorpe photograph. Its pure, inescapable lines would follow muscles and petals the same detailed, slow and irresistible way, even when their sensual, experienced touch is left behind to unveil an unusual contemplative warmth, a lounging poetry and the unaffected peaceful waves of the sea. The works carefully selected by Sofia Coppola from The Robert Mapplethorpe Foundation in New York reflect a distinctively feminine approach, and the curious narrative potential images achieve when looked at through the inquisitive, imaginative mind of a talented director. A mysterious, melancholy and mildly tensed storyboard unwinds black-framed on Galerie Thaddaeus Ropac walls, and its silently suggestive, visually enchanting plot is left to the audience interpretation just like in one of her films.
