EXPLORING TAKSIM SQUARE IN ISTANBUL – TEXT BY PHILIPPE POURHASHEMI

Dear Shaded Viewers,

Taksim square is the heart of modern Istanbul, attracting thousands of visitors each day. With a population of 13 million, it is a vibrant and young city, with a thriving sense of restlessness. I love its fundamental ambiguity: neither European, nor Middle Eastern, it is a fascinating fusion of contrasting cultures.

It was dark when I got back to the Edition hotel. With its skyscraper feel and residential location in the area of Levent, it stands for the aspirational and ambitious nature of Turkish society.
