Gayatri Devi was born princess of the small state of Cooch Bihar, at a young age she wanted to marry Man Singh II, Maharaja of Jaipur, in order to do that she had to accept to be his third wife. That was the only concession that she accepted.
Gayatri Devi defeated purdah, seclusion of women of high lineage in the HIndu tradition. She established the first school fro girls. Member of Congress, she was elected to parliment.
To illustrate the release of "The Last Queen of Jaipur, the legendary life of Maharani Gayatri Devi" book published by Editions White Star, written by Dharmendar Kanwar, Bess Nielsen chose four pictures fromthe 411 documents in the book.These images which symbolize the elegance of a woman, will be presented with saris of Khadi and Co.
