The Beauty of Lalibela

I went to see the Church of Saint George in Lalibela in the north of Ethiopia. It is a monolithic structure — carved from a single slab of bedrock. Along the arid mountain roads, women are wrapped in shema — the softest white cotton that feels like a coccoon around the body. On january 18th, Ethiopians will celebrate Timkat — or the Epiphany — and 200 000 people will come to Lalibela and its many churches … You should go some time, it is wonderful for the spirit … and the coffee — which originated here — is sublime.
