DINO DINCO HATES GETTING STIFFED

In the mail Saturday morning, I received a copy of the fashion anthology published in May 05 by Phaidon. Its title is “Sample” and inside and out, it is beautiful.

100 fashion designers are represented, as curated by 10 people established in the fashion world, including Alexander McQueen, Arianne Phillips and Walter Van Beirendonck. If you haven’t already, buy this book. You’ll want it around the house. I was anxious to see the book, as Arianne had chosen Jeremy Scott as one of her contributors. Jeremy asked me if I minded sharing some images that I had shot using clothes from his “American Excess” (S/S 01) collection. I instantly agreed, as these are some of the pictures I’ve done that are the most “me” — that reflect things I’m most passionate about. In this series, I sought to merge how urban kids found a way to express themselves (through personal style and “glamor shots” photography), with what I see to be “self-portraiture” in Jeremy’s collection. When I opened the book, I was thrilled.

Full-frame images, nice layout and above all, I felt good to be a part of such a sharply designed book. I hope to never be blase about this kind of thing. I also hope the people at Phaidon are happy and sell a bazillion copies.

Coincidentally, the Paris magazine “Blast” had asked to run these images for their August 03 issue, including the cover. (They ran two covers that month – Larry Clark had the other one.) They offered 600 Euros as payment. Cool. The magazine came and went. Although the printing was ugly, they told me “We’re so happy, all of your covers sold out.” Yet when payment was sought, I was told repeatedly, “oooohhh…it eez commink sooon.” Even after several emails, faxes and phone calls to their office…no payment, just excuses. I guess I bring this up only as a direct request to magazines not to take advantage of freelance artists and writers. It’s bad behavior to stiff people. And being in Los Angeles makes it difficult for me to walk into their office, stand on the editor’s desk and kick someone’s computer to the floor.
