Dear Shaded Viewers,
Every winter is a small war, and every spring collection is a peace treaty. Rag & Bone’s SS27 is a treaty signed in cotton and silk, by a brand that wants to be forgiven for the cold without ever admitting it was cold.
Rag & bone shoots its new collection on a downtown New York block: a granite facade, a “No Standing Anytime” sign, a delivery truck with its stripe of civic optimism, a husky wandering into frame like an unpaid extra. The models do not smile or perform. They stand the way people stand when they have been waiting for someone else to blink first.
The collection answers a brutal New York winter with a wish for lightness, and the familiar codes of the brand are reworked in lighter fabrics, softer washes and more relaxed proportions. When a jacket stops hugging the body and starts hanging from the shoulder, it stops asking who is wearing it. The sporty funnel neck, the utilitarian pocket and the practical cut belong to everyone, and the label’s pieces this season lean the same way, built around shirting, knitwear and performance-comfort fabrics that could cross the aisle without a passport.
Then there is colour, which is where the season becomes interesting. The palette pairs resort brights with earthy greens, warm tans, khaki neutrals and sporty pop colours. Read that list as a military map redrawn for holiday: olive and khaki hold the ground, and the brights are the flags planted on top. Denim carries the biggest shift. Rag & Bone moves it beyond traditional indigo into brighter hues and full denim looks. Indigo has been the default for so long that leaving it feels almost impolite. A head-to-toe denim look in a spring shade is a uniform of another kind, one that has swapped rank for mood.
The honest reservation is that this is a wardrobe of refinement, not revolution. The unisex shapes are generous but never radical, and the military references are polite. A reader hoping for tension will find comfort instead. Still, there is a real argument in that comfort. Spring after a hard winter doesn’t need an armoured statement, only a uniform you can enjoy wearing, in a colour that means you’re finished with the cold.
