Dear Shaded Viewers,
LUCES DE NEZA YORK is a group exhibition that brings together contemporary artists whose works—ranging from the figurative to the abstract—engage with urban memory, popular imagination, and the raw energy of Ciudad Nezahualcóyotl, Mexico City.
The upcoming event ‘La Belleza Intangible de los Cuerpos Disidentes’ (The Intangible Beauty of Dissident Bodies), presented by Kika Perez and Fershow Escárcega, offers a talk + visual experience.
“All my life, I’ve moved through Nezahualcóyotl, State of Mexico—a territory built upon clichés. I grew up in the Reforma neighborhood, where machismo and misogyny coexist naturally. Among sawdust and nails in a carpentry workshop, I was surrounded by men and the expectations of what it means to ‘be a good woman.’ These experiences led me to reclaim my body through photography—to question roles, challenge stereotypes, and rediscover my sexuality. These acts allow me to touch the non-places and embrace otherness”, says Kika Perez.
Fershow Escárcega is a visual artist who has spent over a decade exploring urban life in Ciudad Nezahualcóyotl, a municipality on the outskirts of Mexico City. His photography offers an intimate perspective from within, as he was born and raised in the area. Unlike other photographers who approach it as outsiders, Fershow captures the essence of his surroundings with deep understanding and emotional resonance.
His most recognized project, Nezayork, portrays the unique character of Neza—a commuter city where thousands work in Mexico City and return home to rest. Fershow presents its residents as fighters who, despite adversity, never give up. His images highlight the dynamism, resilience, and hope of a marginalized yet vibrant community.
