Dear Shaded Viewers,
Kio, Kai and Nico are three brothers from Vancouver BC that decided to relocate to Tokyo when the lead singer, Kai, had a modeling opportunity in Tokyo. Kai moved to Japan first and soon the other two brothers joined him and they decided to create music as a band. There debut single is called “Around”. The track was inspired by the emotions that follow a life changing experience like moving from Canada to Japan.
After releasing one debut single, the band GLIIICO was tapped to star in launch campaign for Japan’s flagship fashion week, Rakuten Fashion Week Tokyo, alongside model Aria (Tomorrow Agency).
The band is a natural evolution in their lives, and much stimulated by their inspired upbringing with a Japanese mother and Spanish-Filipino father in Vancouver, Canada. Indeed, the name GLIIICO is a homage to Japanese food manufacturer Glico, most famous for producing some of the brothers’ favoured childhood food-memories like Pocky, PRETZ and ready-made curries. It follows then, that GLIIICO’s sound is all about nostalgia, irony and light-hearted sentimentality.
This campaign not only serves to launch Rakuten Fashion Week Tokyo, but to also preview the band’s second single, ‘Nonchalant’. This new track follows a spiritual journey of love, influenced by French pop-rock and intergalactic flirtation. An attempt to end guessing games when people first meet, the song seeks clarity through synthy chords in a love galaxy far, far away.
This follows the release of GLIIICO’s 2020 debut single ‘Around’. A playful confession of sorts and admittance that the boys are still figuring things out, “The song gifted me closure,” admits Kai. The track is accompanied by a video that shares an equally light-hearted tone, following the brothers around their favourite spots in Tokyo.
After moving to Japan to pursue modelling (and has since walked in shows for Louis Vuitton, Kolor and Facetasm, and shot editorials with Nylon, Sense, Hypebeast to name a few) Kai was joined by his brothers Kio and Nico, who also relocated to pursue their own dreams, including establishing their band. “This campaign is a huge honour for us,” said the GLIIICO siblings. “We were excited to work with kidzfrmnowhere Director GenYoshida for Tokyo Fashion Week alongside model Aria Polkey.”
With an eclectic mix of influences, GLIIICO is inspired by the sounds of The Isley Brothers, The Strokes, Tatsuro Yamashita and Finger 5, to create their own sonic nostalgia for 2021. With plans to release a few more singles over the summer, listen out for the band’s debut album set to launch in late 2021.
