Dear Shaded Viewers,
Back in 2001, Disciple Films and I made this interview with Patrick Van Ommeslaeghe, a Belgian designer whose poetic minimalism and quiet intellect made him one of the most distinctive voices to emerge from Antwerp’s vibrant fashion scene. It is his birthday today—a perfect moment to revisit his world and reflect on the enduring relevance of his work.
Patrick studied at the Royal Academy of Fine Arts in Antwerp, where the seeds of his understated, emotionally intelligent design vision first took shape. After establishing his own label, he went on to collaborate with several leading houses, most notably joining Raf Simons at Jil Sander, where his refined sensitivity to shape and structure played a key role in articulating the label’s intelligent purity. His contributions during that period helped crystallize a modern language of elegance—where rigor met poetry, and simplicity revealed its complexity.
From the start, Patrick’s work has been marked by a rare balance of precision and emotion: garments that reveal character through their restraint, and silhouettes that move between intellect and intimacy. His creations remain as relevant today as when we first filmed this interview—testament to a designer who continues to shape fashion through thoughtfulness, subtlety, and timeless grace.
Later,
Diane
