FEMALE, a film by Konstantinos Menelaou, premiers at the Thessaloniki International Film Festival

Dear Shaded Viewers,

FEMALE, the new experimental feature by Konstantinos Menelaou, will have its world premiere on October 31st at the 66th Thessaloniki International Film Festival, part of the Film Forward section, a program dedicated to bold and unconventional cinema.

The film reimagines Greece’s most iconic actress, Aliki Vougiouklaki, through a contemporary lens. Adored by millions and often compared to Marilyn Monroe, Aliki represented both empowerment and restraint, a woman shaped by a culture that celebrated and confined her in equal measure. Three performers interpret Aliki, each revealing a different aspect of her myth. One comes from Athens’ leading drag stage, where his performance had already captivated audiences. Through these shifting perspectives, FEMALE reflects on identity, fame, and vulnerability.

Set in post-war Greece yet resonating strongly today, FEMALE explores the fragile line between image and self, and what it means to live as both muse and mirror.

Synopsis: Alice was an iconic figure in Greek film and theater, an enigmatic pop culture phenomenon, a woman trapped between her public image and her personal reality. Through a multifaceted approach, the film unveils the truth behind her meticulously constructed persona, while exploring the contradictions and social dynamics that shaped her journey.
